Gen Mobile Adds New Network Partner And Plans Via AT&T, Get 7GB For $30
Gen Mobile has some new wireless plans on a new network partner in AT&T. Gen Mobile initially started as a Sprint-based provider that later transitioned over to the T-Mobile network. The new plans on the AT&T network have the same price range as Gen Mobile's
T-Mobile-based plans which range from $10/mo to $60/mo. However, the AT&T-based plans offer significantly more GB of data per dollar than the T-Mobile-based plans. For instance, customers picking an AT&T-based plan can get 7GB of high-speed data for $30/month, whereas, at the same price point on T-Mobile, subscribers only get 5GB. Wave7 Research noted the new plans in a prepaid report the firm recently sent out to its subscribers.
Gen Mobile's AT&T Network Plan Details Compared To T-Mobile Network Plans
There are a total of six Gen Mobile AT&T network plans and they can be identically price matched to their T-Mobile counterparts. Below is a comparison of the differences between the plans at the same price point on each network.
$10/Month Plans
At this price point, Gen Mobile offers one plan option on the AT&T network, but two different plan options on the T-Mobile network.
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 1GB of high-speed data
T-Mobile Option 1 - unlimited talk, unlimited domestic and international text, no data
T-Mobile Option 2 - 300 minutes, unlimited domestic and international text, 1GB high-speed data
$20/Month Plans
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 3GB of high-speed data, unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada
T-Mobile - 2GB high-speed data, mobile hotspot capable, unlimited talk and text to over 100 countries
$30/Month Plans
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 7GB of high-speed data, unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada
T-Mobile - 5GB high-speed data, mobile hotspot capable, unlimited talk and text to over 100 countries
$40/Month Plans
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 16GB of high-speed data, unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada
T-Mobile - 6GB high-speed data, mobile hotspot capable, unlimited talk and text to over 100 countries
$50/Month Plans
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 35GB of high-speed data, 10GB mobile hotspot, unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada
T-Mobile - 7GB high-speed data, mobile hotspot capable, unlimited talk and text to over 100 countries
$60/Month Plans
AT&T - unlimited talk and text with 35GB of high-speed data, 20GB hotspot, unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada
T-Mobile - 8GB high-speed data, mobile hotspot capable, unlimited talk and text to over 100 countries
Taxes and fees may cost extra on all plans. It's unclear if Gen Mobile's AT&T network plans that cost under $50/month also include mobile hotspot.
At the time of this writing, the AT&T-based plans are not on the Gen Mobile website and appear to be only available through Gen Mobile dealers. Gen Mobile was purchased by the DISH Network in September of 2021. DISH also owns Boost Mobile and has begun leveraging its Boost Mobile sales force to also support Gen Mobile through independent multi-carrier prepaid dealer stores. Sources have told Wave7 Research that Boost account executives have been asked to support the brand as it pushes for more distribution.
“The larger context here is that Dish Network has ambitions for Gen Mobile and is trying to expand its distribution. To me, the question is whether Gen Mobile can differentiate itself from numerous other prepaid options that are available. That will be a challenge.” – Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research
With the plan updates to Gen Mobile, DISH Network continues to blur the lines between a few of its wireless brands at the high-end price points. Boost and Gen Mobile now both offer plans at the $50 and $60 price points with 35GB of high-speed data before throttling. DISH-owned Ting meanwhile has a $55 plan with 35GB of high-speed data before throttling. The differences in brands vary primarily by the amount of hotspot data included at a given price point. Boost Mobile for instance allows 12GB and 30GB of hotspot data on its $50 and $60 plans respectively, whereas Gen Mobile only allows 10GB and 20GB at those respective price points. Ting offers 18GB at $55. Gen Mobile differentiates from Boost a little further by also offering Canada and Mexico calling.
